Helicopter was borrowed from the French word hélicoptère, a word constructed from Greekheliko- and pteron, .wing.. Heliko- is a form of helix, .spiral,. that combines with other words and word forms to create new words.The consonant clusterpt in pteron begins many Greek words but relatively few English words,so English speakers who are unfamiliar with Greek do not think of the word`s elements ashelico-pter.
